Spring in Montana

Spring has finally arrived

Ok, first of all…WOOHOO! I love Montana but I have to admit that the older I get, the harder those Winters hit me. I recall being a child begging to go outside to build snow forts, get into snowball fights, build snowmen and go sledding. I had to be practically drug inside with fingers, toes, nose, ears and butt frozen numb. Nowadays, I would rather let my mail pile up until no more will fit inside the box, than go outside even for a quick trip to the mailbox. I am the one most likely to be staring outside from a window, wearing my pajamas, wrapped in a blanket, sipping on hot cocoa and not the photographer to be outside dashing through the snow. Nope, I wait for the Spring thaw.

First outdoor session of the season

Now that most of the snow has melted in some of the higher elevations that I love to visit, I decided that a trip to the Pryors for a photo shoot would be in order. We scheduled it for yesterday and eagerly eyeballed the weather report, hoping there wouldn’t be any snow or rain. If you know anything about that area, a lot of water can really throw a monkey wrench into the works. It’s not terrible if you are just by yourself and looking for adventure but when you are transporting a beautiful young lady, a second shooter, a lot of photography equipment and a cargo area full of couture gowns and wings, you really do care about mud and bad weather. Luckily for us, it turned out to be a gorgeous day (thought it was a tad cold in the early morning hours, dressing said young lady in as much goosebumps as tulle).

Worth the trip

Yes, I know that Billings is surrounded with absolutely gorgeous areas to go for outdoor, on location photography sessions, and I do use maaaaaany of them. However, sometimes it’s really great to mix it up a bit and travel for a little while. Besides getting to see some of the glorious Montana countryside on the way, it gives unique results that not everyone else will already have hanging on their walls. Serious question…how many of your friends have family photos on the Rims? Am I right? When you travel out into the wilderness a little more, you have a change to get a lot of different looks within a relatively short area of driving. A lot of variety in your images is a “more bang for the buck” scenario. Who doesn’t like that?

The results

I am very well pleased with the results we got and can not wait to see these hanging on the wall! While I do absolutely love working in my studio, there is just something to be said about stepping out into Big Sky Country and incorporating some of what makes Montana, Montana, into the portraits. If you would like to talk about some location ideas, just email me at Info@LookAtYouPhoto.com. You can also find me on Instagram and Facebook. All right…ENJOY THE WARMER WEATHER!
