Fine Art…It’s Not Just For Kids
Fine Art For Kids
Everyone knows that ‘fine art children’s portraiture” is pretty big right now. Instagram is filled with it and photographers around the world are making money hand over fist in educating photographers in achieving this style. It’s absolutely beautiful and emotional and impactful and a lot of other “WOW” descriptors. You can see it everywhere from newborns to tweens, though it’s typically a style chosen for kids aged 5-10. If you really don’t know what I’m referring to, HERE is a link to examples from a quick Instagram search. This style is really well suited for young children because of it’s soft, painterly feel that just screams “innocence”. This is something I am proud to offer, as of this year, for children in my sister site TS Gallant Photography. You can see my work of maternity, newborn, child and family by following this LINK to my other website.
Who Says
While I wholeheartedly agree with the basic principal of a perfect match of children with the fine art style, I have to say I don’t feel it shouldn’t be limited like that. Fine art is just that…fine art! The whole style is supposed to emulate a painting in the grand master’s style. Think of Rembrandt, think of Vermeer. Think of da Vinci. Think of Caravaggio. There are soooo many examples I could throw out there but my point is that those paintings aren’t just children. In fact, a great many of them are not children at all! So, I don’t agree with the modern disconnect that “fine art” is for kids only. I say that it’s a mood and not an age, which means it can be applied to anyone, any age, any sex, any physical appearance.
A Woman and Her Dog
I have only gotten to do two fine art sessions with adults (both beautiful young women) but, just like staring at the old paintings in a museum (which is one of my favorite things to do), this style takes my breath away just as much when not child-centric. This weekend I got the opportunity to grab a newly engaged young woman and bring her into my studio for one, at the end of her engagement Reveal & Ordering session. She wasn’t sure what I was doing and didn’t have much time (like I literally had 20 minutes to set up Studio A in my home studio and get the shots before she had to go). I had her husband-to-be actually help with “swooshing” the dress (from my wardrobe, available for my clients). I’m pretty sure he thought I was crazy, too, if I’m being honest. Below, see an example from both of my adult fine art themed sessions I’ve had this year.
Final Result
However, at the end of the day, I got the exact shot that I had in mind (well, the dog was a last-minute add in that just seemed to fit the mood). I am in love with this style. What do you think? Love it? Hate it? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
